FAQs

The transition from expert to leader is one of the most significant, and least supported, career shifts a professional makes. As an expert, your value comes from what you know and what you can personally deliver. As a leader, your value comes from what you can enable others to do. That requires a fundamentally different set of skills: influence without authority, strategic thinking beyond your technical domain, and the ability to communicate complex ideas to people who don’t share your expertise. Mastering Expertship is a 21-week program designed specifically for this transition – not by stripping away technical identity, but by adding the enterprise skills that allow experts to operate at a higher level of impact.

Because everything that made them successful as an expert works against them as a leader. Deep technical knowledge creates a bias toward solving problems personally rather than developing others to solve them. High standards breed frustration with colleagues who don’t share the same depth of expertise. A comfort zone built around technical certainty makes the ambiguity of leadership genuinely uncomfortable. None of this reflects a character flaw, rather it reflects the fact that experts are typically promoted on the basis of their technical performance, with little preparation for the entirely different demands of influencing, communicating, and leading across an organisation.

Micromanagement in technical experts is almost always rooted in the same thing – a belief, usually correct, that they could do the task better themselves. The solution is not to tell them to let go. It is to give them something more valuable to do with their expertise. The Mastering Expertship program works with technical experts to develop their influence and strategic contribution at an organisational level, so that the pull toward doing the technical work themselves is replaced by the genuine satisfaction of shaping decisions, driving innovation, and building the capability of others.

The mistake most organisations make is putting specialists through generic leadership programs designed for managers. The context, the language, and the examples don’t fit, and specialists disengage quickly. Building genuine leadership capability in specialists requires a program built around their specific reality: complex reporting lines, multi-team environments, influence without authority, and a technical identity they are not willing, nor should be asked,to abandon.

Mastering Expertship addresses exactly this context. It runs over 21 weeks, blending face-to-face workshops, individual coaching, 360° feedback, and self-paced learning – all designed specifically for subject matter experts rather than general managers. The program has an NPS of 84 across more than 3,300 participants.

Generic management training rarely works for technical experts – the content assumes a context that doesn’t match their reality. What works is a program that starts from the expert’s world and builds outward: developing business acumen, personal brand, the art of influencing stakeholders, and the ability to contribute strategically beyond the boundaries of a technical discipline. Mastering Expertship does this over 21 weeks through a combination of workshops, individual coaching, and peer learning with other experts facing the same challenges. It has been described by participants and their managers as the MBA for experts – practical, jargon-free, and immediately applicable.

This is the central challenge of every expert who moves into a leadership role, and it rarely happens by intention alone. The shift requires three things. First, a clear understanding of what value looks like at a higher level – what contribution the organisation actually needs from you beyond your technical output. Second, the skills to deliver that contribution: influencing stakeholders, communicating across disciplines, and driving decisions without needing to personally execute them. Third, a gradual redefinition of professional identity – from expert who leads, to leader with deep expertise. Mastering Expertship is designed to support all three, through a structured 21-week program that works with groups of 12 to 16 experts simultaneously, so participants navigate the shift alongside peers who understand exactly what they are experiencing.

Yes. The goal of Mastering Expertship is not to turn technical experts into generic managers. Their expertise is an asset, not a liability to be managed. The program is designed to expand what experts can do with that expertise – to help them operate more strategically, communicate more effectively across the organisation, and influence decisions well beyond their immediate technical domain.

Participants consistently report that the program makes them better at being an expert, not less of one.

The typical participant has 10 to 15 years of technical experience, is regarded by peers as genuinely expert in their field, and is starting to feel constrained by the boundaries of their current role. If someone on your team is capable of more but hasn’t yet developed the influence and enterprise skills to deliver it, they are probably ready. If you are unsure, a brief conversation with us will help you assess fit quickly.

Managers consistently report that participants return with greater confidence in cross-functional situations, improved ability to communicate technical ideas to non-technical stakeholders, and a more proactive approach to contributing beyond their immediate role. These changes are typically visible within weeks of the program beginning, not just at the end.

The total time commitment is 40 hours over 21 weeks – roughly two hours per week on average. Workshops are scheduled in advance so participants and their managers can plan around them. Most organisations find the disruption manageable, particularly given that participants return more effective and less dependent on their manager’s time.

Yes. Cohorts can be drawn from across a single organisation or from multiple organisations within the same industry. Mixed cohorts often produce richer peer learning because participants bring different organisational contexts to the same challenges.

Absolutely – and many of our most engaged participants have no interest in managing a large team. The program is not about becoming a people leader. It is about becoming a more influential, strategically connected expert who can drive outcomes well beyond an immediate technical role.

Most internal leadership programs are built for managers of people. Mastering Expertship is built specifically for technical experts – the context, examples, and challenges are entirely different. It also brings participants together with peers from other organisations facing the same issues, which produces a quality of peer learning that an internal program cannot replicate.

There is no fixed limit, though cohorts run in groups of 12 to 16 so larger organisations may prefer to spread nominations across multiple intakes. Some organisations send two or three people per cohort deliberately – enough to build internal momentum, without concentrating too many people in the same program at the same time.
